Estimate, Quote

The following levels of estimate / quote type are available from webBRIEFCASE.

  • An estimate is an indication of cost (cash and time) which would be required in order to complete an activity. It is not guaranteed and is subject to change throughout the duration of the activity. Most reputable organisations would notify you when the forecasted cost will change and the reason(s) for that change.
  • A rough order of magnitude (ROM) estimate is very a high level educated guess based on very limited information to give you an indication as to whether it's worth even starting an activity / making a purchase. Be aware that you should not use ROMs to compare offerings from two or more different companies, since a breakdown (e.g. in a high level or detailed estimate) may reveal very significant differences. One ROM for example, may include total cost of ownership (TCO) (e.g. support) costs, but another may not.
  • For a high level estimate (HLE) some basic information will be collected and used to provide a more reliable estimate than a rough order of magnitude (ROM). Some additional information may be provided in the estimate, e.g. a high level breakdown of time vs materials, and what degree of support (ref: TCO) is provided. A HLE can be used to compare offerings between two or more different companies. A HLE will usually be provided for FREE but at the discretion of the supplier.
  • A detailed estimate will usually require the collection of more detailed requirements information, and will usually include a more complete breakdown of costs (time and materials). A charge may be applied to detailed estimates depending on the degree of research / investigation required. A tolerance indication may be provided to allow for easier management of project changes.
  • A fixed price quote is similar to a Detailed Estimate, however, there will be no variance in price and no project changes. It is up to the supplier to make all necessary investigations, and to provide a detailed description of what will be provided and under what circumstances. Further, the supplier should understand any potential risks and issues.
